Exoticism and colonialism: a spicy combination?
The British Raj: the period when the British Empire ruled the Indian subcontinent, a region which not only included India, but also stretched from Pakistan to Sri Lanka, Burma to Bangladesh.
Alexander Martin has left London for Bombay to join the IPS (Indian Political Service). Its role is to help the British East India Company to develop its business. Or, in other words, to stop the other European powers from getting a foothold in India.
Bombay’s small English expatriate community has been troubled by strange disappearances. The IPS wants to fix the problem as swiftly as possible, by using its usual methods: accusing one of the East India Company’s competitors. But they haven’t counted on the integrity and stubbornness of Agent Martin, who hates to see an innocent man accused.
Adventure, mystery and colonial exoticism abound…
