How can you catch fish when your whole body becomes luminescent as soon as you’re in the water?! Such is the sad condition of Nahal, a lonely young salamander who, as you might guess, is starving!
When Nahal comes across Lun, a young orphan who has just pulled two beautiful fish out of the lake, Nahal thinks she can negotiate a share of this miraculous catch. But Lun refuses. Since time immemorial, half his catch has gone to the King Fish, the “Patron Saint” of fishing, in exchange for his protection.
Superstition! Bigotry! argues Nahal, who ends up stealing the fish all the same. But no sooner does she bite into it than the King Fish appears in all his gigantic glory. He threatens Nahal with a terrible curse if she doesn’t make amends by offering a Royal Swordfish, a legendary creature that spreads terror on the high seas.
Lun, not wanting to incur the King’s wrath either, offers to accompany Nahal on her quest. They will cross the country to the sea, join a fishing boat and its crew of hardened sailors, be swallowed by a giant octopus with a sea-mail carrier in its belly, and finally reach the underwater City of the Gods, where they will settle their accounts with the King Fish.
