Once, people had roads, cars, tanks, electric scooters, espresso machines, fridges, and toasters. Then, one Thursday (or was it Friday?) a century or two ago, the Great Mist swept them all away, wiped them out, swallowed them up and spewed out monsters that devoured everyone that might have survived, except Temperance—a tiny troll who was rescued by the witch known as Grisette the Reaper and taken to her village in the mountains. There, the girl lives peaceably among all the old witches, who consider themselves protected by Grisette’s magical powers. Until one day, when the terrible Mist finally descends on the village and carries off the weakest of witches.
Forced by the resulting animosity, Temperance is determined to solve the mystery of the Great Mist. Accompanied by the caustic Asma, the bizarre Helen, the mischievous Ezilda, and her crotchety old grandma Grisette, young Temperance leaves the forest in search of human beings… if there are any left.
